Hello it's me again!

Hope everyones January is going Ok?

This week I worked on a cake which had a theme RIGHT up my street, so much so it was staring through my keyhole. Usually I get WAY excited about these kinds of orders because its not everyday someone asks for stuff that I'm really into, BUT the excitedness was overruled by the sheer terror of actually pulling it off. I had never carved such a shape from a block of cake before, and I had never covered a shape like that in icing, so as excited as I was, I was mainly bricking it.

The theme.....a skull cake.

Luckily the customer who bought it had complete faith in me, it wasn't her first cake, she had previously ordered the very first 3 tier Waybuloo cake I made.
But nevertheless I still wasn't confident I could do it.

I baked all my 8" cakes and stacked them up with buttercream filling at the customers request. Then what? I looked at this high stack of cakes and thought where the hell do I start to get a sphere shape from this without cutting the bits off that I need. Its going to end up like a wonky football with eyes. Luckily my baking mascot was right there to help staring at me from on top of the microwave.

You know when you go shopping and there's a sale on? and you know you don't really need the item but somehow you think one day it just MIGHT come in handy. That's what happened when I bought my mascot. I was walking around Tesco after Halloween and spotted 3 lonely looking skulls on the shelf, being drawn to skulls anyway I wandered over to take a look, £1.25 each...Bargain! He was supposed to light up and appeared broken but I gave him a loving home, and named him Ed. (Yeah...I named him. Even my KitchenAids have names!) Due to my cake cupboard not having enough room for him, he currently lives randomly on top of my microwave....or any available surface when he gets in the way. As he watches over all my cake decorating with a tooth grin he has earned the title of baking mascot.

Now was Ed's time to shine! He got lifted from the microwave and placed next to my stack of cakes, then on top of the cakes, then back to the side again...this was so difficult! But I picked up my knife and started to carve. I finally had the shape of his head and managed to keep the cheekbones intact. After faffing around, for a LONG time lightly shaving part off here and there I had my basic skull shape.

After that I slightly padded out the eyes and chin with fondant, put on his underwear (buttercream layer!) and popped him into the fridge for a while. Every time I opened the fridge he sat there on the top shelf staring at me with his sunken buttercream eyesockets :) hee hee

Then I pulled him out and gave him his basic fondant layer.

With my hands and sugar craft tools I sculpted in his teeth, nostrils, and defined the bone structure. Wow, all the hard part was over with, I carved and I covered! Time to get EXCITED!

I don't have an airbrush, so I used the next best thing, a paintbrush and watered down colourings! I mixed the colour I wanted and started to paint dark areas where the crevasses were deep to give more depth, and then lightened the colour as it came out.

Wet skull!

After he dried (and I faffed around painting a little more!) I covered the board and made a wood floor pattern.

Whilst that set a little, I set to work making an eyeball, complete with optical nerve. Yummy.
I made a centipede from fondant hanging out of one eye socket, a spider on the board, and plenty of drippy blood. I thought it would be cool to have the skull crying blood tears, and I ALMOST cut part of the skull at the back to insert an exposed brain, but I thought that maybe going too far! LOL

Aptly named Ed after my fantastic mascot model for the day I'm quite proud of him, and honoured to call him Ed :) lol

Juicy Optical Nerve!

He sat in his box awaiting the reveal. Danielle took a peek and thankfully loved it! The birthday boy was waiting in the car because he didn't want to ruin the surprise, but curiosity got the better of him on the way home and he sneaked a peek! Thankfully he loved it too, so much so he was taking pictures of it and sending it to his mates and he also has it as his profile picture! Very cool :)

Thank-you Danielle again for another awesome order, I loved making Ed! :)

Well hello January

Afternoon Cupcakes! :) **ive just had to edit this post as half of it was missing and didnt make sense! LOL **

We are on our first month of 2012, and so far its 50/50. At this moment in time I want to skip January next year altogether!

But there is good with the bad :)

My first cake of 2012 was a new character, and I was looking forward to it as he is such a cute bear...Little Charley Bear from Cbeebies.

I thought he turned out pretty well, and was really happy with him, but I wasn't expecting his creator to think the same!
Out of the blue I had a lovely comment from the guys who created this little bear on a show narrated by James Corden, and thought I'd made a great version of him. I thought it was awesome of them to take the time to let me know, and if your out there now somewhere....THANK-YOU, you made my day :)

This next cake you have seen a few times before, but I assure you its a newly made one....see it has a different name on it!

Yes its another 3-tier Waybuloo cake. I love the bright coloured cakes, and it seems so do a lot of other people. In fact this couple loved it so much that they paid me to deliver it 3 hours away to their home in Gloucester (and back = 6 hours) as they didn't want to risk anyone else trying to recreate it. THAT IS FLATTERING to say the least. This restores my faith entirely in people. Every so often you get dragged down by the 'how much?' and 'I can get it cheaper' (to be fair I haven't had any of these recently!) BUT when people really appreciate how long it takes you to make and realising your spending all your waking hours on THEIR cake and ignoring all your own day to day jobs, its a good feeling. And again to you...THANK-YOU!

I bake the cakes fresh - I don't freeze, I spend a lot of time making figures and trying to get the details just right, and I spend all day working on your cake (yep, so much so Adam has to keep on top of the washing and ironing! ha ha), I don't fire through models and details like a factory, I take my time which is why dates are limited, and I get booked up WAY in advance. I also hate turning people down, I can see how excited they are to be buying a cake and its gutting to tell them their date isn't available! All I can say is be REALLY organised and book in advance, you can also secure a date and decide on your design at a later date :) x

It was a great start to the caking year - to deliver to somebody who truly understood and appreciated so far away, your crazy...but you made me one very happy lady :)I would like to point out the delivery cost more than the actual cake too.

Another colourful cake coming your way....Peppa Pig and her family doing what they do best.

Complete with a Peppa Pig style duck...and another 'little duck' number 2 :)
I got a real cute picture of the birthday girl with her cake too!

Then another first character came up...Mike the Knight! It's quite a new show on Cbeebies, but very popular already. I created a tall grey castle for him as the customer only wanted one turret. In the show his castle is pale in colour with a red pointy roof, and I was worried that if I only created the one turret it would look like some sort of dodgy rocket :) So I thought a more grey boyish castle would fit better.

I LOVE how little Mike turned out! Usually I find fault with every cake...even found fault with the above, but if there's one thing I'm actually proud of...its the modelling of little Mike.

And did anyone catch Dancing on Ice on ITV? I never usually watch it, but this year COREY FELDMAN is skating! Never in a million years did I expect that name to come on the line-up. To be fair, he is the worst skater in the competition, but you can see how hard he is trying bless him. I don't expect him to last long but I'm sure it will be fun to watch whilst hes in :) Go Corey....and your random strand of hair!

Now it would be so much better to watch all that skating action on our usual 37" TV (Yep I said with the good came the bad) but we got downgraded last night to a 19"...tiny! Our usual main TV of 4 years (LG LCD) has died! The picture is fuzzy no matter what setting you have it on, and we've tried multiple methods of unplugging different cables and things, but nothing makes any difference. Sound is spot on though!
Not only that but our Virgin Media box likes to play up too, so if Ive asked it to record a few shows it usually fails due to it turning off and not coming back on. Damn you electrical ITEMS!

That wasn't the only electrical item to bite the dust this month. Our lovely little black toaster has gone to toaster heaven after refusing to keep the bread down. Damn you.

Our fish tank filter has also been deadly silent over the past few weeks (yeah Its been on my to-do list for quite some time!) BUT good news for a change, it started working all on its own again last night. I think someone is seriously messing with us!

But from there we go onto more, Abbi fell over with a juice bottle in her mouth and cracked her 2 front teeth! Half of it wobbles a little so we don't know if the fall has killed her teeth..only time will tell. Shes going to be a mixture of these next two pictures by the time shes 5 :(

Oh my, she already has the curly hair....

On Friday the 13th (suffering from a very bad cold might I add) my clumsy self somehow manged to get her foot caught in her other pant leg of her Pj's nearly went flying across the carpet and ripped her toenail in half. Yeah, just try reading that sentence again I bet your thinking HOW THE HELL?
Me too.

And today Ive had to squeeze in at the dentist due to waking up with a painful lump at the back of my mouth. After an X-ray it seems my wisdom teeth have grown...underneath my gum...sideways...against my other teeth. I WISH I'd have brought the X-ray home with me because it was some freaky looking cannibalistic mountain man mouth. Awesome to see though ha ha.

Anyhoo...the cause was that there is a little space behind the back tooth where the wisdom tooth was supposed to push through. Something got trapped down there and caused an infection, so yep, I'm on antibiotics!

I don't have my own X-ray but I got this from google which is very similar:

You can't actually see these in my mouth though, they are under the gum. Some.Very. Freaky. Shit.

Best part though, he managed to drain some of the infected cack so its feeling much better already.

We are only part way through January and look what has happened so far. I'm not even going to mention the curtain rail hanging off the wall....

Take the good with the bad, and chin up......Walking Dead season 2 continues next month! yaaayyyuuuuhh!

I'm Late

We are on the 10th January 2012...and I'm about to post about New Years Eve 2011...yep sorry guys, really behind!

So many of you will have spent New Years Eve with a drink in hand...and maybe at a pub/club/party. There was a time I used to do that too! Maybe only once or twice...but it used to make you skint. For the past few years we've stayed in, and probably been in bed for about fact the last New Year's Eve we went to bed early and was awoken at 12pm with a huge amount of bangs. Anyone with a brain would have guessed those will be fireworks going off, but I laid there and thought WHAT THE?? I thought bombs were going off. I was like 'WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!' trying to look through half closed eyes that wouldn't focus. Adam just replied...'Happy New Year' and I put my head back down and went back to sleep LOL

SO this year with the 2 kiddiwinkles we thought we would do something. Me, my Dad and Adam went to the cinema to watch Sherlock Holmes, and the two kids and my Mum went inside one of those 'Snowglobes'. You know...the kind you see at shopping centres where kids are running around like lunatics inside throwing fake snow about and the Dad who got dragged in is stood at the back in a large inflatable bubble with a fake smile on his face thinking....get me out of here! People walking past pointing at him and laughing.
Yep, so glad I decided on the cinema :)

Then it was nosh time....we treated ourselves to the chinese 'Flaming Dragon' which you have seen me blog about before...less of the corn cob incident the better!

Kai LOVES coming here, he said he wants to come here for his birthday LOL

Abbi sat in the window

Can you see my tonsils!?!?!?!

Combine these next two pictures and you'll see where Abbi gets her Susan Boyle eyebrows from:

I dreamed a dream in times gone byyyyyy.......
Yep...poor sod, she will have to have them plucked at the age of 4! lol

This has got to be the campest way to pull a cracker..... ha ha

Ice Cream!

Adam having a little pose with his bowl of ice cream

I feel pretty oh so pretty....

WE feel pretty....oh so pretty.....

What the hell do the chinese put in those crackers?!

After stuffing ourselves silly, we headed round the corner for a few games of bowling.
Sorry totally booked up! Bahhh. But I suppose its a good thing we didn't bowl with full bellies. I could have just rolled myself down the aisle and guaranteed a strike.

So we headed to Mums house for abit instead. Kai kept checking the clock...'its not 12pm yet, I'll tell you when its midnight'
We flicked through the Tv... 2 films were on back to back....and they finished 5 minutes before midnight.
It was Paranormal Activity 1&2....nice one...abit of horror on New Years Eve!

Did Kai make it to midnight?

Not a chance!

We all know horror is a no-go for Adam, so he sat there most of the time playing on the Ipad, but he just cant resist peeking now and again when he hears something. He should never have looked because even now, 10 days after, he is still talking about the ghosties LOL

There was a scene in the first one where the girl gets dragged from her bed and across the landing, but in Paranormal Activity 2, she gets dragged repeatedly down the stairs, and then into the basement...Adam had goosebumps on top of goosebumps. Those were the parts that scared him the most and what he can't stop talking about.

The other day he said he was sat on the toilet (of all places!) early in the morning when it was dark, and the stairgate moved all on its own, he said 'I proper cacked it' hmmm bet you did considering where you were sitting!. I was laughing at him, and then Kai said.....'well at least you didn't get dragged down the stairs.'

Pahaha awesome :)

2011. What a year!....and 2012 to look forward to

Yay Happy New Year guys :)

What a year 2011 has been!

Early 2011 me and Adam decided to finally make a date for our wedding (after about 6-7 years of engagement!)
We chose 2nd September 2012 at Chester Zoo...plenty of time to plan, but wow is it coming round fast!

Our 'not so little' dude turned 5 (he will be 6 in March...eeek!)

I met a total legend! A man who I had wanted to meet for years and was the star of my all time favourite horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street. Mr Robert Englund!

I also got my 2nd Tattoo!

I appeared on Channel 4...Twice! A total once in a lifetime opportunity at the age of 23 (24 now!) I was asked to go on the Fern show for a fun cake competition for the Royal Wedding.....and I met some amazing people!
I even got to meet more celebs....totally mind blowing stuff!

John Hannah! I caught a bit of  'The Mummy' on TV over Christmas and sat there I met him! ha ha how cheesy am I :)

If the experience of actually being amongst all these people and being live on air wasn't be announced winner was something all together different - I'm a very lucky girl.

2011 also brought me my first open air concert...BON JOVI one off gig in rained and poured but god was it good!

Our 'Doodles' turned 2 years old.....

Me and my friend Keiran photographed our first wedding together!

And I didn't expect to be in London again but I was to meet, Corey Feldman, Christopher Lloyd, Super Freddy and to sit in THE DeLorean!

And believe it or not last year was the first time we had a picnic as a family of 4!

I became an Auntie for the very first time to not one, not two..but THREE babies!

Nephew Myles

Niece Bethan

and Nephew Blair

My very first cupcake class...a role of a teacher!

December brought me a LONG awaited gift

Which I have now finished reading, and it's a MUST read for any horror fan :)

I also racked up more than ONE HUNDRED cakes just in 2011!

In between ALL that we squeezed a few family holidays, getaways and days out, most of which are recorded right here on the blog :)

WHAT A YEAR! Its been amazing from start to finish, and I still can't believe I've done some of the stuff that I have.

2012 Brings:
Kai turning 6
Abbi turning 3 and starting Nursery....eeek!
My very own cake website
Our Zoo wedding
and hopefully my first wedding fair
Everything else that gets thrown at me this year will be a bonus......Hope you'll stay for the adventure :)
